Permanent Water Savings Rules

Permanent Water Saving Rules (PWSR) are part of a new Victoria-wide strategy designed to help customers save water by adopting permanent water saving habits.

The PWSR affect residential and commercial water users and are separate from any other water restrictions that East Gippsland Water may need to impose from time to time. More info ...

Voluntary Water Savings

As the name suggests, these restrictions are voluntary in nature and are in addition to Permanent Water Savings Rules.

The intention of Voluntary Water Savings is to make consumers aware that there is potential that Water Restrictions will be imposed because of forecast shortages of water and to encourage heightened awareness of the need to use water wisely.

From a recent media release (9 February 2009):

Following the recent, unprecedented heatwave, East Gippsland Water is urging customers in Omeo to implement Voluntary Water Savings in addition to current Permanent Water Saving Rules, to help conserve drinking water supplies.

The extreme hot weather of the last couple of weeks, and a prolonged period with no rain, have brought a sudden drop in stream flows in Butchers Creek serving the town. These flows are now no more than a trickle, making it impossible to extract the water.

East Gippsland Water is taking steps to cart in water from its other water sources to maintain the volume of drinking water held in storage at Omeo. This will continue until there is sufficient wet weather to increase stream flows in Butchers Creek and enable extraction to resume.

Customers are urged to conserve water wherever they can, by limiting showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off. They should also ensure taps are not left running while shaving, washing or cleaning teeth and cut back on the watering of gardens and lawns where possible.

Omeo customers should also ensure they adhere to Permanent Water Saving Rules which apply throughout East Gippsland and Victoria every day of they year and stand as minimum requirement that everyone must follow.
