Wy Yung water storage goes undercover

East Gippsland Water

In 2008 East Gippsland Water carried out an extensive $2.1 million upgrade to one of its water storages at Wy Yung, to ensure some 18,000 customers in the Bairnsdale area have secure, high quality drinking water supplies for the long term future.

In a move to significantly reduce water loss caused by evaporation and leakage, the earthen walls and floor of one of the two, 88 megalitre open water storages were lined with a geotextile material. Some 24,500 square metres of polypropylene was laid on top and installed as a cover over the entire basin. This action has also reduced the risk of soil, algal and airborne contamination of the stored water.
