Low-pressure sewer pumps play an important role in safely moving wastewater from homes to the sewer network. With simple care, East Gippsland Water customers connected to one of these pumps can help keep their pump working well and avoid unnecessary callouts.
East Gippsland Water’s Manager Network Operations Steve Mowat said all customers with a low-pressure sewer pump are informed their property has the system installed.
“A low-pressure sewer system has an inground pump-well, which stores the sewage from bathrooms, kitchens, laundry and toilets. A pump with a grinder activates to break down the sewage into a slurry which is pumped to an East Gippsland Water water recycling plant,” Mr Mowat said.
“One of the most important ways to care for the pump is to be careful about what goes down the toilet and drains – it is only designed to handle normal household wastewater.”
“No matter what type of sewer system your household has, only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed. Items such as wet wipes, even those labelled “flushable”, do not break down properly and can cause blockages and damage in sewer systems.
“The same applies to sanitary products, nappies, paper towel, fats, oils and food scraps. These items belong in the bin, not the sewer.”
Residents with low-pressure sewer systems can also help by using water wisely and spreading out water use where possible. Large, sudden volumes of water can place extra strain on household plumbing and pumps. Fixing leaking taps and toilets also reduces unnecessary load on the system.
It is important to treat the pump area with care. Access covers should remain clear and should not be built over, landscaped or used for storage. This helps ensure safe access if maintenance is ever needed.
If residents notice unusual noises, odours or changes in how their plumbing is working, they should contact East Gippsland Water as soon as possible. Reporting issues early can help prevent bigger problems.
Low-pressure sewer systems are mostly used in areas where conventional gravity sewers are not practical or cost effective, or environmentally unsuitable. They are commonly installed in areas with rocky ground, high groundwater tables, or steep, difficult terrain.
By taking a few simple steps, the community can help protect low-pressure sewer pumps and keep wastewater services running smoothly for everyone.
