With parts of our region quickly drying out East Gippsland Water is reminding customers to use water wisely and follow the Permanent Water Saving Rules.
David Radford, General Manager Customer, Community & Communications said water plays a critical role in community health and safety.
“It is important for all of us to think about our water use and to save water where we can. With the recent hot weather, we’re seeing parts of East Gippsland drying out fast, which can lead to higher water use while potentially placing future pressure on water catchments,” Mr Radford said.
“There are little steps we can all take to water use in any way we can, whether it’s taking shorter showers or turning off the tap when we’re brushing our teeth.”
Mr Radford said with recent bushfires and hot days it is timely to remind residents that Permanent Water Saving Rules apply every day of the year.
“These rules encourage a common-sense approach to the everyday use of drinking water that reinforce water is a precious resource,” he said.
“Conditions can change quickly. We need to be prepared and keep building good water-saving habits to protect future supply and reduce the likelihood of future water restrictions.”
What are Permanent Water Saving Rules?
Permanent Water Saving Rules encourage everyone to save water at all times when no other water restrictions are in place. Key rules include:
Hand-held hose: You can use a watering can, bucket or a leak-free hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle to water your residential gardens and lawns at any time. Watering systems can be used between 6pm and 10am.
Public gardens, lawns and playing surfaces: Can be watered at any time with a hand-held hose, bucket or watering can. Watering systems fitted with a rain/soil moisture sensor, can be used between 6pm and 10am on any day. Sites may have alternate watering arrangements if they have an approved Water Use Plan.
Hard surfaces: Hard surfaces, including driveways, paths, concrete, tiles and timber decking can only be cleaned if it is required as a result of an accident, fire, health or safety hazard or other emergency, using a high-pressure cleaning unit, hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, or bucket. It is recommended that you use a broom instead of a hose to keep your deck, driveway and paths clean.
Fountains and water features: These can only be used if they recirculate the water.
Permanent Water Saving Rules do not apply to tank water, bore water or greywater (water from showers, baths and washing machines).
