East Gippsland Water is excited to announce that the $8.7 million upgrade of the Wy Yung water storage facility is nearing completion, ensuring a reliable supply of high-quality drinking water for customers.

This critical project has involved replacing the 88ML basin’s liner and cover, alongside structural repairs and system upgrades. Once recommissioned, the facility will continue to play a vital role in the Mitchell water supply network, which serves over 22,000 customers (around 80 per cent) across Bairnsdale and communities eastward, including Paynesville, Lakes Entrance, and Nowa Nowa.

East Gippsland Water Managing Director, Michael Wandmaker, said the Wy Yung water storage facility is a cornerstone of our largest water supply network, the Mitchell River system.

“With summer and the peak holiday season fast approaching, this upgrade ensures we can meet the needs of residents and the influx of visitors to the region.

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of nearby residents during the works, particularly as additional repairs led to minor disruptions, including increased truck movements. We are pleased to share that the liner and cover installation is complete, and filling of the basin concluded last week.”

To express gratitude for the community’s support, as well as the efforts of contractors and staff, East Gippsland Water will host a community barbecue in January 2025.

“We thank everyone involved for their hard work, and we look forward to celebrating this achievement with the community in the new year.”

Now the basin has been filled with treated water, final works on the embankment and internal roads will follow, with the entire project expected to conclude early 2025.
